HSSPA Member FAQ

New to Harvard or Cambridge? Here are answers about joining HSSPA, taking part in activities, and bringing guests. You do not need to know anyone before you begin.

What is HSSPA?

HSSPA is the Harvard Students’ Spouses and Partners Association, a free, volunteer-led community with roots in 1896. It helps spouses and partners make friends, share interests, and feel at home.

Who can become a member?

Spouses and partners of current Harvard students and other recognized current Harvard affiliates can join. Affiliates include faculty, staff, researchers, postdoctoral fellows, and visiting scholars.

Former student spouses and partners who remain connected to HSSPA can also be members.

Can the Harvard student or affiliate join activities too?

Yes, when the event allows it. The student or affiliate connected to a member, children, family, and invited guests may attend suitable activities. Check the invitation. Formal membership follows the spouse-and-partner categories described above.

Do I need to be married or have children?

No. Unmarried partners and people without children are welcome. A short statement from your partner and additional confirmation may be needed. You do not need perfect English or volunteer experience.

How do I join?

Follow the instructions on our Join Us page, including any verification needed. Browse the groups and events, choose something you enjoy, and say hello to the organizer.

What is an HUID and why might HSSPA ask for it?

An HUID is a Harvard University identification number used to help confirm eligibility. It may be your spouse’s or partner’s number, shared with permission.

Use the approved private process, never a group chat. HSSPA will not ask for passwords or login codes.

Do I have to verify again each year?

Not just because a new academic year begins. Report changes in your Harvard connection; an update may be needed for access or benefits.

Does it cost anything?

Membership, WhatsApp access, and HSSPA group activities are free. Leaders do not charge attendees or collect contributions. Check what is included in an activity before signing up. Funding and limited places follow HSSPA’s governance documents.

What can I get out of HSSPA?

You can meet people, share practical tips, explore Cambridge, try an interest group, and join social, cultural, or learning activities. You can also help at an event, share a skill, or volunteer.

Visit our Groups and Events pages for current options.

Can I invite a guest or visiting family member?

Often, if the activity allows guests. Read the invitation and check with the organizer before bringing someone, including children or visiting family. Follow sign-up, age, space, and safety requirements.

A guest invitation is for that activity. It does not automatically give membership, private WhatsApp access, or an HSSPA-funded place.

Can HSSPA pay for my guest’s ticket or expenses?

Do not assume so. Being welcome at an event and being eligible for funding are different.

Guest attendance at a free activity may be possible, but any funded place must meet the approved funding conditions and may need verification. Ask the organizer before booking or making a promise. Limited resources are allocated under the bylaws.

How do I join a WhatsApp group?

Follow the official joining process and wait for any required verification or access confirmation. Please do not forward private invitation links or add friends yourself. A guest needs separate approved access.

The WhatsApp Community Guidelines explain posting, privacy, and who to contact for help.

Can I start a group or volunteer?

Yes. Any eligible member can suggest an activity or offer to help. Check whether an existing group already covers your idea, then contact HSSPA and ask for the Groups Manager.

A new official group needs Board approval before launch. You can lead with someone else, and you do not need a Board title to volunteer.

Can I apply to the Board?

Any eligible member can apply. There is a written application, a conversation with existing Board members, an eligibility check, and a selection decision under the bylaws.

Board service means regular work, monthly meetings, and helping members. Ask what roles are open and what time they need. Click here for more details.

What if I need help or have a concern?

Tell the organizer about access, language, food, or other participation needs.

For a concern, contact the group lead or an appropriate Board member. Choose someone else if that person is involved. Leaders should acknowledge messages within two calendar days and reply or give an update within one week. Decisions needing Board review may take about a month.

Where can I ask another question?

Email info@hsspa.harvard.edu. For more detail, read the Community and Volunteer Handbook.

Feedback and suggestions are welcome. Explain what would help, and the Board can consider improvements. The bylaws and applicable policies govern formal decisions.
