Cambridge and Boston offer multiple transportation options that make car  ownership optional for most residents. Here's a quick overview of your main options:

The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA, locally called "the T") operates the public transportation system in the Greater Boston area.

Cambridge is one of the most bike-friendly cities in the United States, with dedicated bike lanes, paths, and infrastructure.

When public transportation isn't convenient or available, rideshare services and taxis provide door-to-door transportation.

Boston Logan International Airport

Public Transportation

Take the subway to South Station, then transfer to the Silver Line SL1.

Travel time: 45–60 minutes.

Fare: $2.40 to the airport, free from the airport.

Logan Express

Comfortable bus service from Back Bay to the airport.

Fare: $3 to the airport, free from the airport

Rideshare/Taxi

A convenient door-to-door option, especially when traveling with luggage.

Travel time: 20–45 minutes.

Estimated cost: $35–50.

Regional Travel

Commuter Rail

The Massachusetts Commuter Rail connects eastern Massachusetts, with main terminals at North Station and South Station.

Destinations include Providence, Worcester, Newburyport, and more.

Fares: zone-based, approximately $2.40–$13.25 one way.

Amtrak

Amtrak provides service along the Northeast Corridor to New York City, Philadelphia, and Washington, DC, including high-speed Acela and Northeast Regional trains.

Departures from South Station and Back Bay Station.

Tip: Book early at amtrak.com for better fares.

Bus Services

Companies such as Greyhound, Peter Pan, Megabus, and FlixBus offer affordable regional travel.

South Station is the main bus terminal, with additional low-cost Chinatown buses to New York City.

Car Rentals for Trips

Renting a car is a good option for exploring New England, especially outside major cities.

Tip: Weekend rates are often cheaper; reserve in advance during peak travel seasons.
