SPRING PICNIC
at Peabody Terrace!  

  The Spring Picnic is a chance to hang out with old friends and meet new ones while enjoying a delicious picnic in the spring sunshine. All HSSPA members, their families, and guests are welcome!

WHEN:
  Saturday, May 10, 2008, 3-6 pm

WHERE:
  Peabody Terrace Common Room and the adjoining lawn

  Peabody Terrace is a Harvard apartment complex near the Charles River, at the end of Banks Street; the Common Room is located at ground level off the central courtyard.

HOW TO GET THERE:
  By subway: The closest T stop is Harvard Square (red line). Exit the station and walk east on Mass Ave, the first crossing street should be Holyoke Street, take a right turn there and walk down until you hit Mt. Auburn Street. Take a left and continue on Mt. Auburn Street till you see Banks Street, turn right and follow Banks until you are in front of the three tall gray buildings of Peabody Terrace. Keep walking straight until you are in a yard and the Common Room will be on your right. It’s on street level (look for signs posted).

COST:
  None! We welcome your contributions of picnic dishes to share with everyone (such as salads or desserts), but you are not required to bring anything.

  There is no need to sign up for this event, but we would greatly appreciate RSVPs to give us an idea of numbers. So if you plan to attend, please let us know by sending an e-mail to harvardspouses@gmail.com.

  In case of rain, the picnic will be held indoors in the Common Room.

NEXT EVENT

Please join us for a visit of Harvard University’s Arnold Arboretum  

  Our trip will start off with a guided tour of the Hunnewell Visitor Center and of botanical highlights of the grounds. Following the guided tour you can spend the rest of the afternoon strolling through the Arboretums gardens on your own pace.

WHEN:
  Sunday, June 1, 2008. Start of the guided tour at 1 pm at the Hunnewell Information Center at Arnold Arboretum located at the Main Entrance in the North of the Park (Arborway Gate). Please see link for a map further below.

WHERE:
  The Arnold Arboretum of Harvard University, 125 Arborway, Boston, MA 02130. For general information about the Arnold Arboretum please visit this link: Arnold Arboterum. All paved roads of the Arnold Arboretum are accessible to strollers.

HOW TO GET THERE:
  You have two options - please indicate your choice at sign-up!

  1. Arranged transportation: HSSPA will provide arranged transportation (bus) on a first come, first serve basis. The arranged transportation will leave from Harvard Square at 11 am and return from the Arnold Arboretum at 3 pm. You need to sign up no later than May 13 to guarantee a seat on the bus! We will send more detailed information with exact departure location and time to all participants who are interested in arranged transportation after the sign-up deadline!

  2. get there by yourself: if you prefer to get to the Arboretum by your own transportation means, here is the link for detailed directions on how to get to the Arnold Arboretum (car or MBTA). The Arboretum is accessible by MBTA (orange line, Forest Hills Station), but keep in mind that the T on the orange line runs only every 15 min on Sundays. Also there is a 10-15 minute walk from the Forest Hills T-station to the Arnold Arboretum’s Hunnewell Visitor center. Please download and print a map showing the exact location of the Hunnewell visitor center. Free parking is available outside the main gate, on the street along the Arborway.

FOOD and OPTIONAL BRUNCH:
  Picnicking is not allowed on the Arnold Arboretum grounds. However you are encouraged to bring a snack and your own drinks. Please note that there is no café/snack pavilion on the Arboretum grounds! Alternatively, we offer the option to go for brunch at the Dogwood Café at 11.30 am prior to the start of the guided tour (1 pm). The Dogwood Café is at 3712 Washington Street, Jamaica Plain, MA. Please note that the BRUNCH IS AT YOUR OWN COST! To see the brunch menu and prices go to: Dogwood menu. If you are interested in going for brunch please make sure to check the box on the sign up sheet so that we can get a reservation for you. Those who take the arranged transportation, but do not want to sign up for brunch may tour the Arboretum grounds by themselves and gather at the Arnold Arboretum Hunnewell Visitor Center at 1.00 pm for the start of the guided tour.

HOW TO SIGN UP FOR THIS EVENT:
  1. The deadline to sign up is Tuesday, May 13, 2008 (please email HSSPA if you have any questions).
2. Please sign up for the event by emailing HSSPA - please include the attached sign up form. Please indicate the number of adults and children (with ages) who wish to attend. Or print the sign up form, fill it in and send the completed form to the following address per mail by the deadline May 13th:
